100 Core Spellings

In recent years, pupils’ spelling ability has declined. This is likely due to multiple reasons, including the increased use of technology. As a school, we are working on improving our pupils’ spelling and, as a result, have generated a list of ‘100 Core Spellings’.
We have grouped these words into lists of ten and organised these lists by colour. All pupils have completed a test on these words and have been given one of the colour lists to focus on for the next few weeks. Not all pupils will be able to learn all 100 words and so, by focusing on one list at a time, they will see an improvement in their spelling and build their spelling confidence. Your child should be aware which colour list they are working on. If not, they can check with their English teacher.

Spellzone

As well as practising spellings in the traditional way, pupils can practise their spellings using our subscription to Spellzone. All learners have a login for the website. By clicking ‘Word Lists’ along the top menu, pupils can find their focus colour list and practise these spellings by playing games and testing themselves. Pupils have some time to do this during the school day but it would really benefit them to work on this at home too.

Spelling is so important, and we want our pupils to have the skills they need for life beyond school. We recommend spending twenty minutes practising their focus words three times a week.

Spelling Stations

We think spelling is incredibly important and so each classroom has a ‘Spelling Station’ to support pupils with their spelling.
